Washing Machine: Drainage Issues

Finding standing water in your washing machine drum at the end of a cycle is a clear sign that something in the drainage system has failed. Left unaddressed, drainage issues lead to mould growth inside the drum, foul odours that transfer to clothing, and eventually a machine that cannot complete any cycle. Fortunately, the cause is usually straightforward to identify.

The drain pump filter is the first place to inspect. Front-loading washing machines have a small access panel near the bottom of the unit that conceals a filter designed to catch lint, coins, hair ties, and other small objects before they reach the pump. When this filter becomes severely clogged, water cannot pass through quickly enough and remains in the drum after the spin cycle. Place a shallow tray under the filter cap, unscrew it slowly, and allow the trapped water to drain before removing the filter for cleaning.

The drain hose carries water from the pump to your standpipe or utility sink. Kinks in the hose, a clog caused by accumulated lint and detergent residue, or an incorrectly positioned standpipe connection can all prevent proper drainage. Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect the full length of the hose. The standpipe opening should be between 60 cm and 90 cm above the floor — if it is too low, water can siphon back into the drum.

The drain pump itself can fail mechanically or electrically. A pump that hums but does not move water usually has a foreign object jammed in the impeller — a sock, a small garment, or accumulated lint can lock the impeller in place. A pump that is completely silent when the machine attempts to drain indicates an electrical fault in the motor windings or a wiring issue between the control board and the pump.

Using too much detergent or the wrong type of detergent in high-efficiency machines causes excessive foam. The machine's control system detects the foam and may interrupt the spin cycle to allow it to dissipate, which can result in a partial drain. Always use HE-rated detergent in HE machines and follow the dosage instructions precisely. Running a monthly maintenance cycle with a washing machine cleaner tablet removes soap scum and residue that accumulates inside the pump and hoses over time.
