Refrigerator: Not Cooling Properly

A refrigerator that is no longer keeping food cold is an urgent problem. Perishables spoil quickly, and the financial loss from wasted food can be significant. Before calling a technician or shopping for a replacement, there are several common and easily correctable causes worth investigating.

Dirty condenser coils are responsible for a large proportion of cooling failures. The condenser coils release the heat extracted from inside the refrigerator into the surrounding room. When they are coated in dust and pet hair — which happens to most refrigerators within a year of operation — heat exchange efficiency drops sharply. The compressor runs longer cycles trying to compensate, temperatures gradually rise, and energy consumption increases. Unplug the refrigerator, locate the coils (usually beneath or behind the unit), and vacuum them thoroughly with a brush attachment.

The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the refrigerator and freezer compartments. If this fan motor fails, cold air cannot move even when the compressor and coils are working perfectly. Open the freezer and listen — you should hear the fan running whenever the compressor is on. If the freezer is cold but the fresh food compartment is warm, a failed evaporator fan is the most likely cause.

Frost build-up on the evaporator coils is another common cause of poor cooling. All frost-free refrigerators run an automatic defrost cycle several times per day to melt accumulated frost. If the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer fails, frost accumulates until it eventually blocks all airflow across the evaporator. The result is a refrigerator that feels warm despite the compressor running continuously. Manually defrosting the unit — unplugging it for 24 to 48 hours with the doors open — confirms this diagnosis if cooling temporarily restores.

Door gaskets that no longer seal properly allow warm, humid air to enter the cabinet continuously. The compressor compensates by running almost non-stop, but it can never overcome the constant heat load. Test the seal by closing the door on a piece of paper — if you can pull the paper out without resistance, the gasket has lost its grip and needs to be replaced.

If none of the above components are at fault, the compressor or sealed refrigerant system may be failing. These repairs require a certified technician with the proper equipment. A compressor replacement is expensive and on older units it is worth weighing the repair cost against the age and condition of the appliance before proceeding.
