Refrigerator: Ice Maker Failure
An ice maker that has stopped producing ice is a common complaint, particularly in refrigerators that are more than a few years old. Before assuming the ice maker module itself has failed, several simpler causes are worth investigating.
The water supply line that feeds the ice maker is a narrow plastic or copper tube that runs from a valve behind the refrigerator to the ice maker assembly in the freezer. This line is prone to freezing, particularly if the freezer temperature is set too low or if there is a partial blockage causing water to sit in the line. Unplug the refrigerator and use a hair dryer on its lowest setting to gently warm the line. If water flows again after thawing, consider raising the freezer temperature slightly to prevent recurrence.
The water inlet valve is a solenoid-operated valve mounted at the rear of the refrigerator where the water supply connects. It opens electronically to allow water into the ice maker and water dispenser. A valve with insufficient water pressure — below 20 psi — will not open fully. A valve with a failed solenoid will not open at all. Test the pressure at the supply line and use a multimeter to check the solenoid coils for continuity.
The ice maker module controls the entire ice-making cycle — filling, freezing, ejecting, and resetting. Most modules have a manual test mode accessible by pressing a small test button or rotating a gear on the side of the unit. Running a manual test cycle helps confirm whether the module is functioning or needs replacement. If the module cycles through correctly but no ice is produced, the water supply is the more likely fault.
