Microwave: Turntable Not Rotating
A microwave with a turntable that has stopped rotating will still heat food, but unevenly — spots directly under the emitter get overcooked while other areas stay cold. Fortunately, this is one of the least expensive and easiest microwave problems to diagnose, since the parts responsible are small, cheap, and easy to access.
Start by removing the glass tray and the roller ring or guide underneath it. Check that the roller ring is seated correctly in its track and that all the small wheels turn freely — food debris and grease commonly build up in the track and jam the rollers in place. A thorough clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush resolves this in the majority of cases.
Inspect the coupler, the small plastic piece that connects the drive motor shaft to the underside of the glass tray. This coupler is designed to be a wear item and commonly cracks or strips its teeth after years of use. It is inexpensive and simple to replace, and a stripped coupler is one of the most frequent causes of a turntable that no longer spins even though the motor is running.
If cleaning and inspecting the coupler doesn't help, the drive motor itself may have failed. This small motor sits beneath the microwave floor and turns the coupler at a slow, steady speed. A failed motor will produce no movement and no sound at all, whereas a working motor will emit a faint hum even if the coupler above it is stripped.
In a pinch, most microwaves will still cook food safely without a rotating turntable — you can simply turn the dish by hand halfway through the cooking time. But because the fix is usually a five-dollar coupler or a thorough cleaning, it is rarely worth living with the inconvenience for long.
