Microwave: Not Heating
A microwave that lights up, spins the turntable, and counts down normally, but leaves food stone cold at the end of the cycle, is a frustrating and fairly common failure. Because everything else about the microwave appears to work, it is easy to assume the whole unit needs replacing — but in most cases only one component in the high-voltage heating circuit has failed.
The magnetron is the component that actually generates microwave energy. It is the single most expensive part in the appliance, and when it fails the microwave will run normally in every other respect while producing zero heat. On older or lower-cost microwaves, replacing a failed magnetron often costs close to the price of a new unit, which is worth knowing before committing to a repair.
Before condemning the magnetron, a technician will typically test the high-voltage diode and capacitor, which work together to supply the magnetron with the voltage it needs. A failed diode is a much less expensive fix and is actually a more common point of failure than the magnetron itself. Because these components carry lethal voltages even when unplugged, this is not a safe DIY test — the capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after the microwave has been switched off.
Door switches are a simpler and safer possibility to check first. Microwaves use two or three interlock switches to confirm the door is fully closed before allowing the magnetron to fire, as a safety measure. If one of these switches has failed or is misaligned, the microwave will run through its cycle as normal but the control board will never authorise the high-voltage circuit to activate, so no heat is produced.
If your microwave is under five years old and otherwise in good condition, a diode or door switch repair is usually well worth it. For older units, especially if the magnetron is confirmed as the failure, it is often more cost-effective to replace the appliance — a technician's diagnostic visit will tell you which situation you are in before you spend a cent on parts.
