Fridges & Freezers: Water Leaking
Finding a puddle of water on the kitchen floor in front of your refrigerator, or standing water inside the crisper drawers, is one of the more alarming appliance issues because it can look like a major sealed-system failure. In the large majority of cases, though, the cause is far simpler and involves drainage rather than refrigerant.
The defrost drain is a small channel, usually located at the back of the freezer compartment, that carries water from the automatic defrost cycle down to a drain pan underneath the unit where it evaporates. Food debris or a build-up of ice can block this drain, causing melted defrost water to back up and either freeze into an ice pool on the freezer floor or overflow down the interior walls into the fridge compartment below. Locating and clearing the drain opening with warm water and a turkey baster resolves the majority of leaking complaints.
A cracked or disconnected water line supplying an ice maker or in-door water dispenser is the next most common cause, particularly on models where the line runs through the door hinge and can wear through with years of opening and closing. Trace the line from its connection point behind the refrigerator through to the dispenser, checking for any wet spots, kinks, or visible cracks along its length.
Door and drawer gaskets that no longer seal properly allow warm, humid air to enter continuously, and that moisture condenses on cold interior surfaces faster than normal, sometimes appearing as dripping water rather than simple frost. This is especially common on the crisper drawer seals, which see more physical wear from constant opening than the main door gasket.
If the unit is perfectly level, the drain is clear, the water line is intact, and gaskets seal properly but leaking continues, it's worth checking the drain pan itself underneath the unit — a cracked or displaced pan can allow water that is functioning exactly as designed to end up on the floor instead of evaporating harmlessly. This is a simple pan replacement rather than a sign of a bigger mechanical problem.
