Freezer: Not Freezing
A freezer that feels cool but not cold, or where ice cream has gone soft and frozen vegetables have started to thaw, puts weeks or months of stored food at risk. Chest and upright freezers share most of the same cooling components as refrigerators, so the diagnostic process follows a similar order.
Dirty condenser coils are the most common and easiest cause to fix yourself. On upright freezers the coils are usually located on the back panel or underneath behind a toe-kick grille; on chest freezers they often run along the outer cabinet walls. A thick coating of dust prevents the unit from releasing heat efficiently, forcing the compressor to run longer and longer cycles while temperatures inside slowly climb. Unplug the unit and vacuum the coils thoroughly.
Door or lid gaskets that have lost their seal let warm, humid air leak in continuously. Test yours by closing the door on a piece of paper — if it slides out with little resistance, the gasket needs replacing. A compromised seal also causes visible frost build-up around the door edge, which is a useful visual clue even before you test with paper.
If coils are clean and the gasket seals properly, the compressor itself may be failing. Listen for the compressor cycling on and off — a healthy compressor runs in defined cycles, while a failing one may run continuously without ever reaching the set temperature, or may fail to start at all despite an audible clicking sound as the overload relay tries repeatedly to engage.
A refrigerant leak in the sealed system is the least common but most serious possibility, and it requires a certified technician to diagnose and repair — sealed system work involves recovering and recharging refrigerant, which is regulated and not a DIY task. If the compressor runs constantly, the coils are clean, and the freezer still will not reach temperature, a sealed system leak should be near the top of the suspect list.
