Freezer: Excessive Frost Build-Up
A thin, even layer of frost is normal in manual-defrost freezers, but a thick, uneven buildup that reduces usable storage space or blocks the door from closing properly is a sign that something in the defrost or sealing system has failed.
In frost-free models, the defrost heater is responsible for melting accumulated frost off the evaporator coils several times a day on an automatic schedule. When the heater fails, frost keeps accumulating on the coils themselves, eventually blocking airflow entirely and causing the whole unit to warm up even though the compressor continues to run. This is one of the more common sealed-freezer-section repairs and typically requires removing an interior back panel to access the evaporator.
The defrost thermostat and defrost timer work together with the heater to control when and how long the defrost cycle runs. A stuck timer can prevent the defrost cycle from ever starting, while a failed thermostat can prevent the heater from being allowed to activate even when the timer calls for it. Testing these components requires isolating the circuit with a multimeter, since a visual inspection alone rarely reveals which part has failed.
A worn or torn door gasket is the simplest cause and the easiest to check yourself. Every time the door is opened, warm humid room air enters the cabinet; if the gasket does not form a tight seal, that moisture enters continuously and frosts over as soon as it contacts the cold interior surfaces. Inspect the full perimeter of the gasket for cracks, tears, or areas that no longer sit flush against the cabinet.
If you suspect a defrost system failure, a temporary manual defrost — unplugging the unit with the door open for 24 hours, then thoroughly drying the interior before restarting — will confirm the diagnosis. If frost returns within a few days, the heater, thermostat, or timer needs professional attention rather than repeated manual defrosting.
