Dryer: No Heat
A dryer that runs, tumbles, and sounds completely normal but leaves clothes just as wet as when they went in is one of the most common laundry room complaints. Because the drum still turns, it is easy to assume the whole machine is failing, when in reality the problem is almost always isolated to the heating circuit.
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that cuts power to the heating circuit if the dryer overheats, usually because of restricted airflow. Once it blows, it cannot be reset — it must be replaced. A blown thermal fuse is the single most common cause of a no-heat dryer, and it is almost always caused by a clogged vent or lint trap that allowed temperatures inside the cabinet to climb too high.
In electric dryers, the heating element itself is the next likely suspect. It is a coiled wire element that glows and heats the air pulled through the drum. Over years of use the coil can develop a break or short, which will show up as zero continuity when tested with a multimeter. A failed element must be replaced as a unit — it cannot be repaired in place.
Gas dryers rely on an igniter rather than an electric coil. A weak or cracked igniter will glow but fail to draw enough current to open the gas valve, so the burner never lights and no heat is produced even though the igniter appears to be working. Igniters are inexpensive and among the most frequently replaced gas dryer parts.
Before replacing any part, always start by cleaning the lint trap and checking the full length of the exhaust vent for blockages — many 'no heat' calls turn out to be a safety cutoff doing exactly what it is designed to do. If the vent is clear and the dryer still will not heat, a technician can quickly test the thermal fuse, element or igniter, and thermostat to isolate the failed component.
