Dryer: Long Drying Times
A dryer that used to finish a load in forty-five minutes but now needs two or three cycles to get clothes fully dry has not necessarily failed — but it is working much harder than it should, and that inefficiency is both a fire risk and an unnecessary expense on your energy bill.
Restricted exhaust airflow is responsible for the vast majority of long drying times. Lint that escapes the trap accumulates inside the vent duct, and over months or years it narrows the passage until only a fraction of the normal air volume can move through. Long, flexible foil ducting is especially prone to sagging and trapping lint at low points. A full vent cleaning, ideally with a proper rotary brush rather than just a vacuum, restores proper airflow in most cases.
The lint trap screen itself deserves attention too. Even if you clean it before every load, a thin invisible film from dryer sheets can build up over time and reduce airflow through the mesh. Wash the screen periodically with hot water and a soft brush, and hold it up to a light — if you cannot see light passing evenly through the mesh, it needs a deeper cleaning.
A partially failed heating element or igniter can also cause long dry times without causing a complete no-heat condition. If only part of an electric coil is functioning, or a gas igniter is weak but still eventually lights the burner, the dryer produces some heat — just not enough to dry a full load efficiently. A technician can measure element resistance or observe igniter glow time to confirm this.
Finally, check the moisture sensor strips inside the drum if your dryer has automatic sensor-dry cycles. A film of fabric softener residue on the sensor bars prevents them from accurately detecting when clothes are dry, which can cause the cycle to run longer than necessary or end too early. Wiping the sensor strips with a vinegar-dampened cloth every few months keeps automatic cycles accurate.
