Dishwasher: Poor Cleaning Results
If your dishes are coming out of the dishwasher still dirty, spotted, or with a white film, you are not alone. Poor cleaning performance is one of the most common dishwasher complaints, and in most cases it is caused by a problem that can be diagnosed and fixed without replacing the appliance.
The spray arms are the heart of the cleaning system. They rotate and push pressurised water across every rack. Over time, the small holes in the spray arms become clogged with mineral deposits, food particles, or debris. When the holes are blocked, water pressure drops and dishes in certain sections of the rack never get properly rinsed. Remove the spray arms, hold them under running water, and use a toothpick or thin wire to clear every opening. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.
The filter basket located at the bottom of the tub captures food debris so it does not recirculate onto clean dishes. Most modern dishwashers use a manual filter that must be cleaned by the owner every one to two months. A heavily clogged filter restricts water flow through the pump, reducing wash pressure across the entire machine. Twist it out, rinse it under warm water, and use a soft brush to remove any trapped grease or buildup.
Water temperature is another critical factor. Your dishwasher relies on hot water to activate detergent and cut through grease. The incoming water should reach at least 49 °C (120 °F). If your home water heater is set lower, or if the dishwasher is located far from the heater and the water cools in the pipes, cleaning performance suffers noticeably. Run the hot tap at the kitchen sink for thirty seconds before starting a cycle to flush cold water from the line.
The detergent dispenser door must open fully and at the right time in the cycle. If the latch is broken or the spring is weak, the dispenser may open too late or not at all, leaving concentrated detergent pooled in the bottom of the tub rather than mixing into the wash water. Inspect the dispenser for cracks, sticky residue, or a broken spring and replace it if necessary.
Finally, loading habits matter more than most people realise. Overcrowding prevents water from reaching every surface. Nesting bowls and stacking plates tightly together create blind spots where water cannot penetrate. Load dishes with their soiled sides facing the spray arms, leave space between items, and never block the rotation path of the arms. Combining proper loading with a clean filter, clear spray arms, and the right water temperature will restore your dishwasher to like-new cleaning performance.
