Cooktop: Burner Won't Ignite

A gas cooktop burner that clicks rapidly without ever producing a flame is one of the most common kitchen appliance complaints, and it is almost always caused by something simple: blocked ports, moisture near the igniter, or a worn electrode.

Food debris and boil-over residue are the number one cause. Grease and spilled food bake onto the burner cap and base over time, physically blocking the small ports that gas flows through to reach the spark. Remove the burner cap and grate, wash them in warm soapy water, and use a straightened paperclip or toothpick to clear every port individually. Dry all components completely before reassembling — even a small amount of moisture near the igniter tip will cause continuous clicking with no ignition.

The spark igniter electrode sits next to the burner and produces the actual spark. Its ceramic insulating base can crack over years of heat cycling, which lets the spark ground out against the cooktop surface instead of jumping to the burner where it is needed. A cracked electrode base is visible on close inspection and must be replaced — it cannot be repaired.

If every burner on the cooktop has stopped igniting simultaneously, the shared spark module is the more likely cause rather than any individual electrode. This module generates the high-voltage pulse for all burners from a single control board and is a straightforward swap for a technician once diagnosed.

As a safety note: if you ever smell gas but get no ignition after a few attempts, stop trying, turn the control knob off, ventilate the kitchen, and call for service rather than continuing to attempt ignition. A burner that is flooding unburned gas into the room is a hazard that needs a technician's attention, not repeated clicking.
